Welcome to my new website

Many of us over 60 are counted out when part-time jobs come up despite our collective wisdom and abilities.

To counter some of this prejudice I have dispensed with sending my CV and have instead created The Complete Picture, an animated ninety second overview of my life to date @ https://vimeo.com/223960456.

The Massage is the Medium by Derek Wyatt   It’s hard to remember when serious politics was not part of the entertainment business.   Since 1992, when BSB started Sky News, the first UK 24 hour news channel on a shoestring, our political leaders, such as they are, have had to respond to a different agenda not always set by themselves. Sky has been followed by a dozen more 24 hour news channels including France 24 (in English), Press TV (Iranian sponsored and yes again in...

Blog 23-29 March 2015 Royal Trinity Hospice  I was appointed the chairman of Trinity Hospice, Clapham towards the end of 2010 and took up my unpaid role on 1st Feb 2011 so I am in my fifth year. As is the case with a charity the job description said 12 days a year but in my first year I did over 80! On Monday, I joined James Hibbert a Trustee (he runs Dress2Kill) at our warehouse in Balham to better understand our online offering. We have 23 charity shops with a 24th being opened in...

Rugby World Cup 2015 beckons in September by Derek Wyatt   Having just completed the best Six Nations tournament for ages, our finest players will hardly have time to take breath.   In less than three months time they will have given up any chance of that beach holiday because in August these self-same six nation players will be assembling at squad camps to ready themselves for a series of friendly matches. Some friendlies! England will play Wales twice as well as France whilst...

What is the point of a web site? I was the creator and director of the first family computer channel in the UK (on BSkyB) which was initially called the Computer Channel and ended up as dot.tv. Our web site in 1996 had video (!) and we placed our programmes on to it though that wasn't as easy at it sounds. When I was elected to Parliament in May, 1997 it was a shock to find how far behind the authorities were and how it took to move the machinery into the 19th century let alone the late...

The Health Select Committee published its report on Palliative Care two days ago. You can access it viawww.parliament.uk and then use the search. Highlights: The care that people receive at the end of their lives has a profound impact not only upon them but also upon their families and carers. At the most difficult of times, their experience will be made worse if they encounter poor communication and planning or inadequate professional expertise. The Health Committee has looked at the state of...

On Friday evening I went to the sell out concert at The Barbican for Jazz for Labour where without exception the finest jazz singers and musicians dropped by to support our message of fairness and diversity. The idea for the concert was Bob Blizzard's the PPC for Waveney (Lowestoft to you and me) where he had been the MP for thirteen years. Bob is bonkers about Jazz - who isn't? John Prescott and Rachel Reeves welcomed us and then Andy Sheppard wowed us with a scintillating performance. At the...

Selma is a film about Martin Luther King (David Oyelowo) and his relationships with Coretta (wife/Carmen Ejogo)), the black movement and most importantly, LBJ, the President of the USA (played brilliantly by Tom Wilkinson). It did not get the recognition it deserved in the Oscars (one for music). It is a much better film than the biopic on Mandela and worth a viewing.
