I travelled up to the University Church of St.Mary the Virgin in the High at Oxford for the memorial service for Sir Patrick Nairne GCB MC PC. Patrick had died earlier on 4th June aged 91.
There were several beautiful speeches from Sandy Nairne - a son and currently Director of the NPG, from Professor Sir Andrew Motion a lifelong friend and Lord Wilson of Dinton with some touching prayers by The Revd Charlie Cleverly (a Godson).
The church was packed out and if I had one slight regret it was that we failed to give Patrick a rousing round of applause.
